We are pleased to be able to announce that OE Electrics has been awarded Manufacturer of the Year 2019 (under 25m) at the Insider Made in Yorkshire awards.

Director Sarah Hobbs accepted the award on behalf of the company, thanking staff for all their continuous hard work and dedication. Acknowledging some of the company’s successes over the past year, we celebrated the opening of our new office in Germany and company growth since moving into our new home in Calder Park, Wakefield, back in 2017.

The event saw many manufacturing businesses, from a range of sectors, come together to celebrate all that is great in manufacturing and acknowledge the regions most innovative companies – a group that we are proud to be amongst.

MAJOR EXPANSION SPARKS INTEREST IN OE ELECTRICS

Wakefield-based OE Electrics is a relative newcomer to the Made in Yorkshire network - but it is intent on making a big show.

The company, which manufactures and distributes electrical equipment, made a major impression at the recent Made in Yorkshire Expo with its eye-catching charging and connection points proving to be one of the lasting memories in a long list of notable displays.

David Masters, Group Managing Director, OE Electrics, saidġ “This was our first expo and we really enjoyed it. We have been very impressed since we joined Made in Yorkshire and we see a lot of value in it.

“It will also be a useful platform for us to build connections as we look to grow our business.”

That growth has been most clearly displayed with the company’s relocation to new premises. It has invested more than £9m in a move that has doubled the size of its operation.

The 66,000 sq ft facility at Calder Park is intended to futureproof the company by providing it with the additional capacity to accommodate growth.

“We want to expand and are looking to create more than 100 new jobs - including new apprenticeships, many of which will be recruited locally,” said David.

“We have been fortunate in that we have been able to recruit some of these new positions already but as an industry, we really need to to more to attract young people into manufacturing.”

David is collaborating with Wakefield Council to try and develop skills initiatives that will hopefully encourage more youngsters to view manufacturing as a viable career.

“What we need to do is to encourage more young people to visit manufacturing facilities so they can see that the industry is not the way it is portrayed by many in the media or in schools, or even by their parents,” he says.

It is a message he is keen to convey to the rest of the industry and to his Made in Yorkshire colleagues.

“Manufacturers need to do more to open up their factories and encourage more young people to come and visit. It is the only way we will make any progress in overcoming the skills gap.”

Whilst the company’s previous focus was very much on the office market, the additional capacity provided by the move will enable the company to target different sectors, such as education, healthcare, leisure and passenger transport.

OE Electrics Limited began life more than 30 years ago in a small warehouse in Wakefield. We are now a leading designer and manufacturer of mains power and USB charging solutions.

We work with commercial furniture manufacturers all over the world. We not only have our purpose built manufacturing site in Wakefield, but also have sites in Germany and Australia. This allows us to service the whole world; providing custom solutions to many global brands.

Winning the Queen’s award is, in a large part, due to our wonderful staff, from Manufacturing to Customer support, to Technical and Quotations. Our in-house Product Design department work closely with our customers to provide the best solutions. And each product goes through a rigorous testing process with national and international testing houses. This ensures we meet all the relevant standards for each individual country we supply.

Recently we have concentrated our innovation on designing an industry leading USB charger. Our patented replaceable ‘TUF-Charger’ can be installed into, not only any of standard products but also into virtually any suitable environment required. The unique design allows facility managers to replace or upgrade the USB charger without the need for an electrician, or indeed turning off the power.

Our ‘Always Innovating’ motto not only applies to our products but also the ways in which we work. Our success, as a company, is due to our innovative approach to manufacturing processes and staff development. We are continuously looking for ways to improve, whether that is supply chains or routes to market.

In 2014, when we realised we could supply industries other than office, we rebranded from ‘Office Electrics’ to ‘OE Electrics’. We now support airport seating manufacturers, laboratory fit out companies, and Universities to name but a few.

As a result of being able to supply many other industries, we have grown dramatically; increasing staff numbers and expertise. This, in turn, has propelled the company forward to become the ‘go to’ firm for advice and custom solutions.

In order to improve our reach into Europe, we created OE Electrics GmbH. This manufacturing site near Cologne will work closely with distributors in Germany, France, Poland and Holland. Our new ‘click and connect’ modular system: QikFit allows distributors and customers to design and assemble their own units. The innovative design allows distributors to buy the product in kit form so they can service their customer without the need for complicated manufacturing processes.

QikFit is also compatible with our subsidiary company Elsafe’s range of products, offering more opportunity for new markets internationally

OE ELECTRICS ESTABLISHES NEW APPRENTICESHIP PARTNERSHIP

Electrical manufacturer OE Electrics has established a partnership with Wakefield College to offer two engineering apprenticeships to local students.

This is a first for the Wakefield-based firm - which stages a Made in Yorkshire networking event at its new premises on Wednesday (August 22) - and it is confident this will be the first of many apprenticeship opportunities to be offered through the partnership.

The official start date for the apprentices will be confirmed for the start of the college year in September, but the two students, Lewis Phillips and Dominik Keeler, have already started their induction at OE Electrics to get a feel for the work, the company, and to get to know the team.

The one-year apprenticeship constitutes mostly practical study on site at OE Electrics, where the students will be supervised by Engineering Manager, Jason Teasdale, who has been working in engineering since 1990. In addition, the apprentices will study one day per week at Wakefield College working towards their level 2 engineering certificate.

The partnership with Wakefield College has been facilitated by OE Electrics Operations Manager, Richard Durr, who said: Weve been wanting to do something like this for a while and we now have the resources to really make it work. I think this is the beginning of a great programme and Im proud to be a part of it.

Janine Sibson from Wakefield College said of the partnership: Wakefield College are delighted to be working in partnership with OE Electrics as they recruit their first apprentices. I am looking forward to our continued relationship and assisting further as future apprenticeship opportunities become available.

Group Managing Director for OE Electrics, David Masters, added: With our move into new premises last year, we now have an opportunity to work more closely with the local community. Janine and Wakefield College have been fantastic and we are excited to continue this relationship and offer more apprenticeships with the college in a variety of business areas going forward.

In 2017, OE Electrics moved into a purpose-built, 66,000 sq ft facility in Calder Park, Wakefield. The £9m project, which was part-funded by the Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Business Growth Programme, has doubled the size of OE Electrics Wakefield operations and will lead to the creation of over 100 local jobs over the next few years.

OE Electrics feel ‘Immensely proud’ to win Product of the Year for their product, PLY.

The Group Managing Director of OE Electrics, David Masters, has stated that he feels ‘immensely proud’ at the company winning ‘Product of the Year’ in the Lighting, Technology & Accessories category at the Mixology North 19 award ceremony.

OE Electrics, which manufactures power and data distribution solutions, won the award for its PLY product, which you can see below. The company also saw competition from two competitors, Colebrook Bosson Saunders with Lima and SBFI with Arc Duo.

Made in Yorkshire sat down with David Masters, to discuss with him the award, and what it means to OE Electrics. We began by asking David what his general thoughts were to OE Electrics winning the award, both on a personal level and on a wider company level.

David stated, “I feel immensely proud of further recognition for not just OE but specifically our Design Team. We have known for some years we were considered the Innovators of our Industry but it has never been recognised by a specific award before, achieving this has now highlighted to our market that we are the leaders and just recognition for our team of Designers.”

We also asked David about the product, and why he thinks the PLY range won the award, and more broadly what makes OE Electrics products appeal to the consumer.

“Our industry products have for years been considered a necessary functional product rather than desirable, yet we supply into a fashion industry that we identified needs great looking fashionable products.

We made that statement with Pixel and Pluto and have continued to set trends and Ply is yet another of those products to show colour shape and size matter when designing these solutions, coupled with that our Patented TUF Replaceable USB Cartridge made it a winner.”

Representing OE Electrics on the night of the award was Tim Hobbs Technical Director, who was there as a representative and leader of the Design Team, as well as Patrick Tarbit, the Sales and Marketing Director who was supported by other members of the Sales Team.

Looking toward the future, we asked David, based on the great response OE Electrics has had to the PLY range, what’s next for the company?

He responded by saying that the entire team will be continuing to push the key elements that helped PLY win, that being, “We will continue to be the innovators, bringing out new products that will provide solutions to problems customer don’t know they have yet. Our focus is to constantly advance and push the boundaries of design and functionality and we have a brilliant team that can do that. We are very excited about the technology we will be launching in 2020, so watch this space!”

David also believes this award will help showcase the successes of the company to clients saying: “The award has highlighted to our current and future customers that we have a highly successful formula of Award Winning Design and functionality that make the Ply the best solution on the market.”

OE Electrics helps financial giant PwC with upgrade to London office

Wakefield-based OE Electrics has supported financial giant PwC with its plans to remove almost all landline phones from UK offices by the end of this year and switch its 18,000 UK staff to mobile networks.

PwC is no stranger to an agile work environment but with 24 offices throughout the UK, the world’s second-largest professional services company was facing a mammoth task with its switch-over plans.

OE Electrics had begun by supporting the financial services group’s upgrade to its Leeds office and then more recently, with its More London office.

The More London location reflects a truly agile workplace, with a variety of working areas for employees to choose from, including open collaborative areas, glass-walled booths and private casual meeting spaces.

A wide selection of OE Electrics products have been used in the upgrade including Pluto units with a custom rust-effect finish, unique to PwC. In addition, Pixel units provide a simple, integrated charging option and Polar Ice units are located adjacent to computer monitors where employees can plug in their laptops for dual-screen use.

In the casual soft seating areas, Pose units (below) bring a standard power socket to a convenient height for employees, where they can plug in and charge their laptops while working and collaborating.

PwC’s ‘Mobile First’ is proving a resounding success. Every space in the building is well used.

OE help PwC Manchester create iconic office space in No.1 Spinningfields

November 2017 marked the start of a new era for PwC in the North West and the Manchester office as 920 staff said farewell to Barbirolli Square, the home of PwC Manchester for the last 20 years, and relocated to the new iconic No1 Spinningfields the final commercial property to be constructed in Spinningfields.

No1 Spinningfields is a world-class building, designed by locally based Ian Simpson Architects and is the tallest built commercial building in Manchester during the last 50 years. Consisting of over 260,000sqft of space across 19 floors PwC will initially occupy 67,000 sq.ft over three floors with a further floor of 25,000 sq.ft secured for future growth.

The office space has been designed to provide a variety of choice, to break down barriers, hierarchies and physical separations between teams and to provide total flexibility with a choice of different work settings for the way PwC works now and in the future. The office has also been designed with our clients in mind and includes convenient client workspaces that can be used by clients when visiting PwC or when they are between meetings in the city centre.

Special attention has also been given to reflect the true spirit of Manchester which can be seen in the colour schemes and the internal design features to create an office that puts Manchester at its heart first and the PwC brand second you will see references to the Manchester Bee, Graphene, iconic buildings and music venues in the city.

A cross-office and cross-grade steering group have worked together for the past two years, canvassing the opinions and requirements of all staff, making sure that everyones voice has been heard and most importantly, working together with the design team to create an amazing space that is fit for the future and will facilitate continued growth.

OE Electrics were privileged to provide a number of power and data distribution solutions for PwC, including Pluto, Pose, Phase, and PixelTUF; all in custom colours to compliment the spaces colour scheme and internal design. We were delighted to see Pluto, usually an on-desk unit, mounted beneath a table; proof that our customers are just as innovative as our products!

Our people have led the development of the office and weve worked very closely with the developers to design an office that breaks new ground in many ways. The office focuses on allowing our people and clients to work flexibly, utilising technology to ensure we can work together effectively. OE Electrics Host Jeremy Corbyn MP

OE Electrics were pleased to host Jeremy Corbyn MP as he delivered his speech last Thursday from our head office in Wakefield, West Yorkshire. It was certainly not our usual Thursday morning here, as we saw national press, including the likes of Jon Snow (Channel 4 News) gather in the main foyer of the building to listen to Mr. Corbyn and ask questions.

Following his speech, we were privileged to show Mr. Corbyn what we do and how we work here at OE Electrics. Expressing pride in our heritage; doing as much as we can designing and manufacturing in-house, from concept to completion. Nonetheless, proud of our expansion – distributing internationally – with colleagues and clients in Australia, Dubai, and Europe.

Pleased to be recognised by the Labour party as a successful British manufacturer and to host such a huge event, we hope Mr. Corbyn enjoyed his visit as much as we did and maybe even learnt a thing or two about our state-of-the-art manufacturing processes.

OE ELECTRICS RAISE £770 FOR YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE

Following a tremendous day out at the Rotary Dragon Boat Challenge, and an arguably more tremendous effort from our team here at OE Electrics, we can proudly say that we raised an incredible £770 for our chosen charity, Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

The event, held at Pugneys Country Park, saw 36 teams race over the course of the day. Battling not just each other, but the unwelcome 30-degree heat – all in the name of charity – our team of Wakefield-based manufacturers (Team ‘We Need OE’) finished 26th of 36 teams – a great achievement for a boat-full of newbies.

From our rowing team to those who couldn’t find their sea legs manning equally important food and games stalls – it was a huge success!

A Bit About Our Chosen Charity: Yorkshire Air Ambulance

As a Yorkshire-born company, it’s important to us that we give back to our local community, hence our chosen charity. Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a helicopter emergency service unit for the Yorkshire and Humber region. The funding of which, relies solely on the donations of individuals and organisations. The swift medical interventions provided by the Air Ambulance crews, from remote, rural areas to major motorways, have a major impact on a patient’s chance of survival.

Made in Yorkshire member OE Electric’s had an electrifying event at their facility in Wakefield this week. Members gathered to network, learn more about OE Electrics and their best practices as well as see first hand the company’s capabilities with a tour around the facility.

The best practice morning began at 8 am where members gathered in the company reception to network and grab refreshments. Here, guests were welcomed to try out OE Electrics products with hi-tech charging ports and funky electrical outputs.

Next was the presentation by Managing Director David Masters, CEO of the Made in Group Jason Pitt introduced the presentation to the Made in Yorkshire members. Jason spoke about the Made exhibitions and positivity going forward regardless of the current climate. He also spoke about localisation and how this is more important now than it has ever been.

David’s presentation particularly focused on OE Electrics vision of making £100 million by 2025, and how they hope to achieve this going forward. The presentation began with the background of the company, established in 1986, OE Electrics originally began distributing a German product with three sockets in. Today, they manufacture a range of products suited to their customer's needs. Talking about the purpose of the facility, David said:

“We built this to show off our products and the full range that we do. Everywhere that you walk around, you will see our products. We did this so that we can show customers that we fit every purpose.”

OE Electric’s end users consist of big-name brands such as Nike, eBay, Amazon, DHL and Costa Coffee. Sharing best practice with like-minded people from the manufacturing sector David said:

“As I imagine you are all growing companies, I advise you to take pictures and keep records of your growth. This is to look back on and see where you have come from and understand the story that you can tell to people. I think being part of Made in Yorkshire is about sharing your story and demonstrating how you have grown”

To achieve the aim of making £100 million by 2025, David spoke about the company's plans to go global. With a sister company in Australia and another OE Electrics branch in Germany, they have now expanded into North America, to reach a wider market. However regardless of this, David hopes to keep the family-like atmosphere within the business, he said:

“Without our team, there would be no OE Electrics.”

After the presentation, members were welcomed to attend a tour of the premises, where they had insight into everything from the offices, Research and Development, Design and Manufacturing.

The first stop on the tour was the offices, where OE Electrics staff were positioned to work in an efficient and effective way. The offices also included a range of the companies products, proving that OE Electrics is capable of fitting out an office with highly efficient electrical devices.

Later on into the tour, members were able to see where the products are manufactured and the different departments this includes. This consisted of engineering, welding and engraving, sub assembling, moulding and socket automated assembly.

In the design section, members learned the companies best practice when it comes to marketing their products. This included the advertisements showing how their products would benefit customers, and doing this by telling a story in the images. The OE Electrics team shared that their newsletters focus on people rather than the products, which has proven to have a higher click rate.

The event ended with further networking in the reception. Talking about what he hopes members took away from the event, David said:

“I’d like to think they feed off what we do and how we do it. I try to educate them on what we are good at and what we aren't so good at, but also that we get an opportunity to look at their businesses and where we could improve ours.”

OE Electrics Hosts a Sold-Out Made in Yorkshire Factory Tour

We were delighted to welcome 50 manufacturers to OE Electrics’ Wakefield facility for a sold-out Made in Yorkshire factory tour, marking the first factory tour event of the year and a fantastic opportunity to open our doors to fellow manufacturers from across the region.

The event was particularly meaningful for us, coming seven years on from our previous Made in Yorkshire factory tour in 2019. At that point, we had only recently moved into our purpose-built facility and were still very much growing into the space. Since then, the business has evolved significantly — not just in scale, but in how we use the building, how we operate day-to-day, and how we continuously improve across the organisation.

The factory tour provided the perfect opportunity to reflect on that journey and to share how the site has matured to support productivity, flexibility and long-term growth.

An Insight-Rich Tour of the Facility

Attendees were taken through a structured, guided factory tour, rotating through a series of focused stations across the site. Each stop was led by members of our team who have been directly involved in delivering the improvements being showcased, giving visitors practical, first-hand insight into how changes were implemented and why they matter.

The tour highlighted a wide range of best practices, including:

Optimisation of shopfloor layout and material flow, reducing wasted space and improving visibility
Significant productivity gains achieved through process improvement, rather than heavy capital investment
The introduction of one-piece flow lines and SMED principles, enabling faster changeovers and increased throughput
Improved inventory management and space release, supporting both efficiency and cash flow
Greater use of digital tools on the shopfloor, providing real-time information and improved accuracy

Rather than focusing on theory, the emphasis throughout was on practical learning — sharing what we’ve changed, what we’ve learned along the way, and how incremental improvements can compound over time.

Digitalisation Driving Efficiency

One area that generated particular interest was our approach to digitalisation, especially within order processing and information flow. Over recent years, we have moved towards a near-paperless operation, introducing digital order management and “digital golden folders” to replace manual paperwork.

This shift has reduced administration, improved version control and enabled faster response to customer changes. Crucially, it has allowed us to do more with fewer resources, freeing up our people to focus on higher-value activity while improving reliability and consistency across the business.

Culture, Capability and Global Growth

Following the tour, attendees enjoyed further networking and an engaging panel discussion, which explored wider aspects of our journey. Conversations covered our ongoing culture transformation, how we support flexibility and engagement on the shopfloor, and how we balance continuous improvement with maintaining a strong, people-first environment.

We also discussed our international growth, with OE supplying customers across Europe, the Middle East, North America and beyond, alongside our continued focus on sustainability, reshoring and product longevity.

These discussions reflected the realities many manufacturers are facing — rising costs, skills challenges and the need to remain agile — and made for a particularly valuable exchange of experience.

Connecting Industry and Policy

The factory tour followed a recent visit to OE by Jade Botterill MP, co-ordinated with Made in Yorkshire. During that visit, OE Electrics’ Managing Director, Nigel Bibby, personally led Jade around the facility before sitting down with her to discuss both our successes and the challenges we are navigating in the current climate.

Those conversations covered productivity improvements, digitalisation and growth, alongside pressures such as energy costs, employment costs, skills availability and long-term planning. That earlier visit added valuable context to the factory tour, reinforcing the importance of connecting real manufacturing environments with wider policy discussions.

A True Team Effort

The success of the factory tour was very much a team effort. From the station guides and group hosts on the shopfloor, to the panel contributors, the team supporting on the front desk and hospitality, and everyone involved behind the scenes, the day was delivered with professionalism, pride and genuine openness.

A special mention must go to Charlie Owen, who pulled the event together and managed the logistics on OE’s side, ensuring everything ran smoothly from start to finish.

We would also like to thank Made in Yorkshire for making the event happen, bringing together such a strong mix of manufacturers and ensuring a fantastic turnout on the day.

Looking Ahead

The factory tour was a proud moment for everyone at OE Electrics. It gave our team the opportunity to showcase their work, share their knowledge and reflect on how far the business has come since first moving into the facility — while also learning from the conversations sparked with fellow manufacturers.

We thoroughly enjoyed hosting the event and look forward to continuing to share best practice, collaborate across the manufacturing community and build on the progress we’ve made so far.

OE Electrics opened their doors this week to welcome over 40 decision makers from Yorkshire based manufacturing and engineering companies to network, share best practice and industry insights at their new purpose built facility in Wakefield.

The morning began with networking and coffee in the impressive entrance hall to the new facility. The group were able to find seats on a multitude of OE collaborated furniture and have a look at all their products in action.

David Masters, Managing Director of OE Electrics, led a presentation focusing on the growth and development the business has gone through since its inception in 1986 which has led to the need for a new purpose built facility. David emphasised the importance staff culture and employee engagement had on the move and how they were able to complete the relocation in one weekend with no loss of production hours.

To finish off the morning everyone donned their PPE and headed down to the factory in groups for a tour of the manufacturing facilities. Everyone had a chance to view the offices, the test facility, the paint shop, the machine shop, the media lounge, the injection moulding shop, the automated assembly line, the manual assembly department and warehousing. Members also toured the impressive canteen and company gym, to understand the work being done to support the workforce and promote productivity and inclusivity.

Having attended more of the events and connected to quite a few the members now the meetings have a real feel of community, bond and support structure.
